Madan Mohan's Maya

In the 1920s a Gaudiya Math was established in Bhaghbazaar, Kolkata - one of the many maths - with the intention of spreading Gaudiya Vaishnavism and the philosophy of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Every year on the day after Diwali, Annakut is celebrated at the Math. Devotees gather inside the central temple of the complex and sing Kirtan (devotional songs) for Lord Krishna or Madan Mohanji - as he is colloquially called. After the kirtans, devotees perform 108 parikramas or pradakshinas (circumambulation) of the inner sanctum. After the parikrama, all of them sit down for prasad, which is a simple meal comprising of vegetables and khichdi cooked from the first rice of the new harvest.
