The Marriage Mela

Tarnetar Fair is the most important fair of Saurashtra. Thousands of Kolis, Rabaris, Bharwads, Khants, Kanbis, Kathis, Charans, the Harijans and the Deshrabaris descend on the village of Tarnetar in the month of Bhadarva, to pay homage to Triniteshwar Mahadev (The Three-eyed Lord), to commemorate Draupadi’s swayamvar and to find their life partners.

Young men and women dress up and put their best foot forwards to attract potential spouses; men strut about with colorful and umbrellas and unmarried girls wear red zimlis (skirts) and richly embroidered blouses. And there is folk music and dance, horse races and all the paraphernalia a fair has.
