Merely an ordinary Wedding Story

Last year a tiger killed fisherman Arjun Mandal when he went for fishing in the creeks of Sundarban delta. The accident was so severe the forest department unable to recover the dead body. By losing the sole bread earner of the family, the Mandal family slipped into the neck-deep poverty. Pushpa Mandal is now a patient of chronic depression and suffers from PTSD. Yet, by fighting against all odds, Pushpa able to find a lovely local boy as Priyanka's husband. Priya (23) got married on 7th Dec, and, I photographed their entire journey.

  • Rajat Jubilee is a remote village in Sunderban which comes under Gosaba block. The village has no direct road connectivity. Their transportation is entirely based on the river. For transportation of heavy material, they have to trust cargo boats which took 5 hrs to reach from the nearest town Gosaba. Here Rahul, Mithun and with the help of two locals, they are offloading an almirah they bought for Priyanka's marriage.

  • As the Hiranmay's procession headed towards the venue, followed by folk artist Nityananda Sarkar and his band. Unlike urban weddings, the parade is a low key affair. Nityananda dressed up like a Naachni. Nachni is the remaining rump of the once dominant tawaif (nautch-girl) culture.

Since I did not do well after my husband's death, she did not leave my side. She was like a pillar to me, sacrificing her career. Now she is going forever, how am I to survive without her?"
